Penn National Gaming presents a compelling paradox for market participants. While the company continues to post impressive operational metrics, a distinct sense of investor skepticism persists. The stock is navigating a complex environment characterized by robust growth figures on one side and a prevailing bearish sentiment on the other.

Investor Sentiment Contrasts with Expansion Efforts

Despite the company’s fundamental strength, the Fear & Greed Index reading of 39 continues to signal “Fear” among the investment community. Short-term technical indicators paint a mixed picture for the stock:

  • It closed higher on 19 out of the last 30 trading days (a 63% positive rate)
  • Price volatility measured 5.90%
  • The current share price sits 3.1% below its five-day forecast

Notably, options trading activity for the September 19, 2025, expiration remains robust across various strike prices, indicating sustained market interest despite the overarching cautious mood.

This investor wariness stands in stark contrast to the company’s aggressive growth strategy. Penn National Gaming is pushing forward with a dual-pronged expansion. On December 1st, the second hotel tower at the M Resort Las Vegas is scheduled to open, underscoring the company’s commitment to the premium physical casino segment. Concurrently, its digital offensive is intensifying, highlighted by a recent partnership with the Chicago Bears and the launch of its standalone Hollywood Casino app in West Virginia.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Penn National Gaming?

Operational Performance Reaches Record Highs

The underlying operational data tells a story of significant strength. Pennsylvania’s gaming sector, a key market for Penn National, reported a record-breaking $582.3 million in revenue for August, representing the second-highest monthly total in history and a substantial 14.2% year-over-year increase.

The iGaming segment, comprising the Penn National Race Course and Hollywood Casino operations in Pennsylvania, was a major contributor. It generated $85.5 million, marking impressive growth of 18.5%. The entire online casino sector in the state reached $231.2 million, a surge of 25.9%, with online slots acting as the primary driver by pulling in $179.3 million—a 29.6% jump.

The sports betting segment also experienced explosive growth. Taxable revenue from sports wagering skyrocketed 63.8% to reach $49.2 million. This combination of strong physical presence and dynamic digital growth continues to define the company’s strategic path forward.
