MP Materials Stock Faces Pressure as Insiders Reduce Holdings

Shares of MP Materials are navigating a turbulent correction, having retreated significantly from their peak earlier this year. The stock, which had surged more than 260% from January, has seen its value nearly halve from an all-time high above $100 to a current trading level around $52. This volatility comes amid a mixed backdrop: operational advancements are being overshadowed by substantial selling activity from corporate leaders and major institutional shareholders.

Strategic Deal Provides Long-Term Foundation

Despite the present selling pressure, the company’s strategic importance remains underscored by a key governmental partnership. In November 2025, MP Materials entered into a definitive joint venture agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Saudi Arabian mining firm Ma’aden.

The core of this pact involves constructing a rare earths refining facility in Saudi Arabia. The initiative is designed to diversify the global supply chain for materials critical to both defense and industrial sectors. This geopolitical role as a partner to Western strategic interests is expected to provide a fundamental support level for the stock, potentially cushioning against more severe declines.

Insider Transactions Signal Caution

A significant factor contributing to the recent price decline has been notable share disposals by key stakeholders. Data from December 18 reveals that the Moody National Bank Trust Division cut its stake by approximately 65.5% during the third quarter.

However, a transaction by CEO James Litinsky carries even greater weight for market sentiment. On December 5, the company’s chief executive sold 385,000 shares at an average price just under $63, realizing total proceeds of about $24.2 million. Although Litinsky retains a substantial equity position, liquidations of this magnitude often trigger short-term bearish sentiment. Indeed, the share price has slid from around $62 to the current $52 level following this sale.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MP Materials?

Financial Turnaround in Focus

Market participants are now looking ahead to the financial results for the fourth quarter of 2025. Following several quarters of losses, driven largely by heavy investment in production capacity expansion, analysts project that MP Materials could return to profitability.

Consensus estimates forecast earnings per share of roughly $0.10. Rising production volumes and the implementation of price protection agreements with the DoD are anticipated to help offset the company’s persistently high operational costs.

Diverging Signals Create Investor Uncertainty

The present scenario at MP Materials is defined by contrasting signals. While insiders are capitalizing on gains and withdrawing liquidity from the market in the near term, the investment firm Morgan Stanley recently upgraded the stock to an “Overweight” rating, attaching a $71 price target.

For investors, the path forward likely hinges on whether the anticipated Q4 profits can successfully restore confidence that has been eroded by the wave of insider selling. The coming earnings report will be a critical test, determining if operational progress can ultimately outweigh the caution expressed by those closest to the company.
