Nvidia’s Capital Conundrum: A $14 Billion Platform Bet Collides With Calls for a Historic Buyback

The arithmetic at Nvidia is starting to demand attention. On one side sits a freshly confirmed $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face—roughly $14 billion once employee retention packages are folded in—a deal that won’t close until the first half of 2027 and still needs to clear antitrust review. On the other sits Jim Cramer, the television personality and investor, publicly pressing the company to authorize a $500 billion share repurchase. Both storylines converged in the same trading week, and together they frame a question that goes to the heart of how the chipmaker intends to deploy its formidable cash pile.

Cramer aired his proposal on Thursday, pointing to a nagging disconnect: despite explosive growth in artificial intelligence demand, Nvidia’s stock has risen just eight percent since the GTC conference in October 2025. The S&P 500, by contrast, has climbed eleven percent over the same stretch. His remedy—a buyback of historic proportions—would dwarf even Apple’s roughly $800 billion in repurchases under Tim Cook, a comparison Cramer himself invoked.

The company is hardly a stranger to returning capital. Nvidia bought back $40.4 billion worth of its own shares in fiscal 2026, and the first two quarters of fiscal 2027 have already added roughly $40 billion more. Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress has stated that the firm channels 60 percent of free cash flow back to shareholders. The balance sheet, in other words, could theoretically absorb a program of the scale Cramer envisions. Whether management shares his conviction that the equity is undervalued is another matter entirely.

A Stock That Keeps Climbing, Quietly

The market, for now, appears untroubled by the competing claims on Nvidia’s capital. Shares traded at €198.18 on Friday, up 0.9 percent from the previous close of €196.48. That leaves the stock roughly two percent shy of its 52-week high of €202.50, set in May, and about 24 percent higher since the start of the year. Over the past seven trading sessions, the gain stands at 5.5 percent.

What makes the resilience notable is that investors are shrugging off the regulatory overhang attached to the Hugging Face deal. The acquisition of the open-source platform—the central hub where developers worldwide share and train AI models—positions Nvidia as something more than a supplier of silicon. Control of that platform yields a stream of data on trends, user behavior, and future compute demand, an informational advantage that competitors cannot easily replicate. The strategic logic is clear enough. But the closing date sits more than a year out, and competition authorities in both the United States and Europe are likely to scrutinize a deal that consolidates control over a key piece of the AI development infrastructure. If the review drags or imposes conditions, the strategic payoff recedes while the capital commitment is already made.

The Growth Engine Shows No Signs of Stalling

The underlying business numbers do little to support any narrative of a company in retreat. For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, reported on August 26, Nvidia posted revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106 percent year over year. The data center segment alone contributed $89 billion, a 117 percent increase. Management also pointed to a cloud order backlog among customers exceeding $2 trillion—evidence, if any were needed, that demand for computing capacity shows no sign of abating.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Those figures were released last Thursday, and the market has had time to digest them. The Hugging Face confirmation arrived a week later, on the same day Cramer made his buyback case. The juxtaposition was almost certainly not coincidental: a company growing at triple-digit rates, trading near record highs, and yet facing public pressure to signal confidence in its own valuation through a repurchase of unprecedented size.

A Pattern of Parallel Bets

The Hugging Face transaction does not stand alone. Bloomberg reported in early September that talks were already advanced, and Nvidia has been moving on multiple fronts simultaneously. A $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek for NVLink Fusion has been reported, as has a potential stake in Perplexity. The cadence of dealmaking suggests a company intent on securing anchor positions across every layer of the AI stack—chips, networking, models, applications—rather than relying on chip sales alone to sustain its growth narrative indefinitely.

That raises an uncomfortable question that neither the earnings report nor the acquisition spree fully answers: Is Nvidia growing organically into new markets, or is it buying time because the core business is approaching a natural growth ceiling? The quarterly results argue against the latter interpretation, at least for now. But a company simultaneously committing billions to memory procurement and negotiating multiple acquisitions is also signaling that pure hardware sales no longer guarantee the growth story on their own.

The Real Test Arrives in 2027

For the moment, the strategic benefits of the Hugging Face deal appear to outweigh the risks in the eyes of most observers. The price tag, while substantial, is manageable for a company of Nvidia’s scale. The market has largely looked past the antitrust question, and the stock continues to hover near its high.

Yet the confluence of events this week—a $14 billion acquisition announced, a $500 billion buyback demanded, and a stock that keeps grinding higher—underscores a deeper tension. Nvidia is placing multiple large bets simultaneously, from MediaTek to Hugging Face to rumored additional stakes, while regulators have yet to render their verdict on any of them. The company’s capital allocation strategy is being tested in real time, and the outcome will not be fully known until the Hugging Face deal closes in 2027—assuming it closes at all.

Whether Nvidia responds to Cramer’s proposal remains an open question; the company has offered no official reaction. What is clear is that the debate over how to deploy an enormous and growing cash flow has become one of the more compelling subplots of the current earnings season. The share price may be near its record, but the decisions being made now will determine whether the next chapter of Nvidia’s story is written through organic growth, strategic acquisition, or some combination of both.
