ServiceNow’s Contradiction Trade: Wall Street Steps Back, Investors Lean In

The market has a peculiar way of ignoring the very signals it claims to respect. When Goldman Sachs quietly removed ServiceNow from its prized “Conviction List” in its August US market update, the playbook suggested a predictable outcome: the stock would bleed. Instead, the opposite unfolded. ServiceNow shares closed Monday at €99.74, up 3.38 percent on the day, extending a weekly gain of 2.68 percent and a monthly advance of 5.75 percent. The bank rotated into names it deemed better suited for a “broader market” — Microsoft, Applied Materials, and Delta Air Lines among them — yet the software maker’s investors barely flinched.

The Goldman decision, ordinarily a meaningful blow to sentiment, was overshadowed by something more tangible: a beat-and-raise quarter that has refocused attention on ServiceNow’s AI-driven revenue engine. Dozens of sell-side firms continue to carry buy ratings on the stock, and the average analyst price target sits at €121.76, roughly 22 percent above current levels. The Street, in other words, remains largely constructive even as one of its most influential voices steps back.

But beneath the resilient tape lies a more complicated story — one that cuts to the heart of ServiceNow’s identity. The company that sells enterprises the promise that AI agents can render repetitive human labor obsolete is now applying that logic to its own workforce. Roughly 300 jobs are being eliminated in Silicon Valley as part of what the company describes as an “AI-focused realignment.” A spokesperson frames the effort not as cost-cutting but as an efficiency drive: ServiceNow is “focused on having the right talent in the right roles,” investing actively in AI skills while managing headcount with discipline.

The math behind the restructuring is worth unpacking. ServiceNow entered 2026 with approximately 29,000 employees and now counts around 30,000, a bump attributable to its acquisitions of Moveworks, Veza, and Armis. The company plans to end the year back at its starting point — a reduction of roughly 1,000 positions in total, leaving room for another 700 cuts beyond the Silicon Valley tranche without dipping below the January baseline. CEO Bill McDermott flagged this trajectory at the past two earnings calls, telling analysts in July: “We are a growth company, and we will grow. We will grow fast.” The integration work, he argued, should unlock improvements in both operating margins and free-cash-flow margins.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

There is an undeniable irony in the market’s reaction. Layoffs at a company whose entire pitch is that AI eliminates repetitive work could easily be read as evidence that the disruption narrative applies to ServiceNow itself. That tension has not been lost on analysts. Simply Wall St has noted that the Silicon Valley cuts could damage the official storyline if they are interpreted as a response to cost pressure rather than a proactive repositioning — a concern sharpened by the fact that while revenue rose in Q2 2026, net income and earnings per share both declined.

The stock’s behavior suggests investors are choosing the more charitable interpretation. The annualized 30-day volatility sits at nearly 65 percent — an extreme reading for a company with a market capitalization around €99 billion — and the RSI at 58.8 points to neutral-to-slightly-bullish momentum, still far from overbought territory. This is not the profile of a mature, predictable software business. It is the profile of a stock fought over quarter after quarter, as the market wrestles with whether AI is tailwind or existential threat for ServiceNow.

The coming months will deliver the verdict. The promised cost savings and productivity gains from the restructuring should begin showing up in the next earnings report, offering the first concrete test of whether the current rally rests on substance or narrative. For now, the market has chosen its side: a Wall Street downgrade and hundreds of job cuts, met with a shrug and a share-price advance. The real question — whether a company can simultaneously be AI’s evangelist and its casualty — remains unanswered, but ServiceNow is providing a live case study.
