After years of extensive planning, Vulcan Energy Resources has commenced the physical construction phase of its landmark Lionheart project in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley. The Australia-German lithium developer reached this critical milestone following the finalization of a comprehensive €2.2 billion financing package in December 2025.

Construction and Funding Secured

The company’s board granted final investment approval after securing the necessary capital. According to a quarterly report dated January 30, 2026, the financing structure included a private placement component raising approximately €147 million (A$263 million). Combined with institutional investment, total equity proceeds reached about €545 million (A$973 million).

Vulcan Energy reported cash reserves of €523 million at the close of the December 2025 quarter. Net cash inflows from the capital raising initiative during the reporting period exceeded €508 million.

Simultaneous Development Across Sites

Construction is now underway at multiple locations. Work has started on the Geothermal Lithium Extraction Plant (G-LEP) at the Landau site. Concurrently, development of the central lithium processing facility in Frankfurt-Höchst is progressing. The company confirms that all major construction permits for Phase One have been obtained, with engineering and construction management contracts already signed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Encouraging Results from Well Testing

On January 21, 2026, Vulcan announced positive production test results from its first new Lionheart well, designated LSC-1b. Testing confirmed a sustainable flow rate between 105 and 125 liters per second. This performance validates the reservoir assumptions outlined in the Lionheart field development plan.

Major Shareholder Increases Stake

Construction group HOCHTIEF, which also serves as a project contractor, has expanded its equity position in Vulcan Energy to 15.41%. An extraordinary general meeting held on January 12, 2026, addressed matters related to the recent capital increase.

Phase One Project Specifications

Key operational data for the initial phase includes:

  • Annual production capacity: 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate
  • Battery equivalent: Sufficient lithium to supply approximately 500,000 electric vehicles per year
  • Energy output: 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of thermal energy annually
  • Project life: Planned operational duration of 30 years

Forward Timeline

A gravimetric and magnetic aerial survey launched in November 2025 is scheduled for completion in February 2026. The company’s next quarterly report, covering the period through March 2026, is anticipated by the end of April 2026.
