DroneShield’s Balance-Sheet Squeeze: Record Revenue Meets Shrinking Per-Share Value

For investors tracking DroneShield’s ascent, the headline numbers from Wednesday’s half-year report told a familiar growth story — record sales, a reaffirmed outlook, and a bulging order book. But buried in the detail was a less flattering metric: net tangible assets per share slipped to A$0.28 by June 30, down from A$0.33 just six months earlier.

The erosion of that per-share cushion cuts to the heart of a debate now dividing the market. Can the counter-drone specialist’s expansion justify a balance sheet that is being steadily diluted by operational losses and heavy investment? The stock’s muted reaction to the results — down 0.9 percent since the report landed — suggests many holders are still weighing that question.

The Cost of Chasing Growth

Revenue for the first half hit a record A$125.8 million, yet the company booked a net loss after tax of A$32.2 million. Adjusted EBITDA swung from a positive A$8.0 million in the prior-year period to a loss of A$12.4 million, and management again opted to skip an interim dividend.

What partially offsets that red ink is the trajectory of recurring revenue, which jumped 229 percent to A$11.5 million — now representing 9.2 percent of total sales, up from roughly 3 percent a year earlier. The shift toward software and subscription-style income signals a deliberate pivot away from pure hardware transactions, even if the transition is currently costing more than it returns.

On the liquidity front, the company sits on A$180 million in cash and term deposits with zero debt — a buffer that can absorb near-term losses, though it does nothing to reverse the declining net tangible asset figure per share.

Analysts Split, Shorts Circle

Broker reactions to the numbers arrived with contrasting emphasis. Bell Potter maintained its buy rating but trimmed its price target from A$2.50 to A$2.40, while Canaccord Genuity held firmer at A$2.60. Both assessments were framed around the same underlying data, yet the divergence in targets reflects genuine uncertainty about how quickly profitability can catch up with the revenue engine.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

That engine remains well fuelled. Management reiterated full-year 2026 guidance of A$250 million to A$270 million in revenue, backed by a record A$240 million in contracted sales secured as of August 21. An additional A$43 million in contracted revenue is expected to flow through in 2027 and beyond.

None of this, however, has dislodged the bearish positioning that has made DroneShield the most heavily shorted stock on the Australian exchange, according to ASIC data from late August. The elevated short interest helps explain why robust fundamentals have failed to spark a sustained rally — and why the shares continue to trade roughly 16 percent below their 50-day moving average of A$1.28 (€1.28 equivalent at the German listing).

RfRecon and the Road Ahead

Attention now shifts to the second half, when management expects the first sales of its next-generation RfRecon platform — a product unveiled about a month ago that has so far contributed only a modest 1.6 percent uptick in the share price. The platform’s full revenue contribution is not expected until 2027.

Lingering in the background is the ASIC investigation into the company’s November 2025 ASX disclosures, which remains unresolved with no decision announced on next steps. That regulatory overhang, combined with the shrinking per-share asset base, keeps a lid on sentiment even as the order book grows.

The stock closed Friday at €1.07 in German trading, up 2.6 percent on the day — a bounce that does little to alter a 30-day decline of 23 percent. With annualised volatility running at 87 percent, this remains a trade for the risk-tolerant. For longer-term holders, the central tension is unchanged: contracted revenue and a fortified pipeline argue for patience, while the thinning balance sheet per share argues for vigilance. The next reporting cycle will show which force wins out.
