Ethereum Plunge Sparks Market Turmoil as Key Support Levels Shatter

The cryptocurrency sector finds itself gripped by panic, with Ethereum bearing the heaviest losses among major digital assets. As the second-largest cryptocurrency breaches crucial technical support levels, investors face forced liquidations exceeding $1 billion. With market sentiment indicators plunging into “extreme fear” territory, analysts debate whether this represents the start of a broader market collapse or a strategic buying opportunity for savvy investors.

Market Sentiment Plummets to Extreme Fear

A dramatic shift in investor psychology has taken hold across cryptocurrency markets. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index has collapsed to readings between 21 and 27, firmly establishing what market participants term “extreme fear” conditions. This represents a stark reversal from the outright greed that characterized market sentiment just weeks earlier.

The deteriorating mood triggered an unprecedented wave of liquidations, with between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion in positions forcibly closed within a 24-hour window. Ethereum long positions worth hundreds of millions were wiped out, with Bitcoin experiencing even greater liquidation pressure. Market observers attribute the nervousness primarily to ambiguous signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve regarding potential interest rate reductions.

Technical Breakdown Accelerates Selling Pressure

During early trading hours on November 5, Ethereum experienced a severe technical breakdown. The digital asset plummeted to $3,057 before staging a modest recovery to approximately $3,270—still representing a nearly 9% decline over 24 hours. Alternative data sources recorded lows around $3,166, indicating a more severe correction exceeding 12% that substantially outpaced Bitcoin’s retreat.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ethereum?

Most concerning to technical analysts was Ethereum’s breach below its 200-day moving average for the first time in nine months. Chart specialists interpret this development as a significant warning signal suggesting deeper underlying weakness rather than routine market correction. Ethereum now trades approximately 34% below its all-time peak, while trading volume exploded to $61.75 billion—representing over one-quarter of total cryptocurrency market activity.

Network Activity Defies Price Weakness

Contradicting the price chaos, Ethereum’s underlying network demonstrates robust health. Early November witnessed daily transactions and active wallets reaching new record highs, fueled by expanding decentralized finance applications, non-fungible token activity, and growing Layer-2 solution adoption. These metrics indicate the network’s fundamental utility remains strong despite market turbulence.

Large investor behavior presents additional intrigue. While one prominent whale strategically employed flash loans to avoid liquidation, exchange outflows of Ethereum have simultaneously increased. This pattern potentially indicates that long-term oriented investors are exploiting price weakness to accumulate additional positions. Meanwhile, development teams continue advancing the “Fusaka” upgrade for enhanced efficiency while accelerating real-world asset tokenization initiatives—a trend that has gained substantial momentum throughout 2025.
